Camping DOC
DOC is the Department of Conservation in New Zealand. They offer basic campsites (often just a shower and toilet) but located in national parks. Prices vary depending on the campsite, they can be from NZ$0 to NZ$20. Often you’re asked to make a small donation in the form of a payment in a "honesty box" (box at the entrance of the park where you make your donation.)
DOC Campsite Pass
You can buy the DOC pass directly on their website.

Freedom Camping
The law is more strict regarding freedom camping. Campers are no longer entitled to freedom camp and bans are becoming more numerous.
However, freedom camping remains okay with your self contained motorhome (eg you have a toilet and shower in your vehicle). Just make sure as their are still some restricted areas but these will be sign posted. Download the campermate app if you need these while you are on the road.
You can easily find beautiful small remote areas to spend your night beside a lake or near a mountain. A pleasure in its purest form!
However, we ask you to take all your rubbish with you if you are camping. New Zealand is a clean green country and it would be nice we all respect that, thank you in advance.
